Spending time with Katherine Bodey
Katherine Bodey - DCH Legal Group Director
Your journey
Tell us about your journey, what have you been up to since we last saw you at Scope?
I graduated from university with Bachelor of Laws & Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology; I was admitted into the Supreme Court of Western Australia in August 2009 and began practicing as a family lawyer with DCH Legal Group of which I am now, a director.
Moments in time
What are the two most pivotal moments in your career that you either learned from or got you where you are today?
- I had a quarter life crisis (age 24) where I questioned the type of person I wanted to be, moving forward. That ended up with me making the decision to go to university and study what I had always wanted to study (since 12), being law. As a mature aged entry student I enrolled in arts, majoring in psych and after first year of uni transferred to law and did a double degree in these two disciplines.
- Having completed seven years of tertiary study; time flies when you’re having fun and doing what you love.
Your thoughts on motivation
What are your personal motivators and drivers that keep you doing what you do?
For me, my personal motivator is wanting to do more, be more, give more and see more.
How do you motivate your team?
By acknowledging their contributions in the day to day tasks that they do and encouraging opportunities for us all to grow our own potential including learning from each other and others in our industry.
Your advice
What advice would you give someone starting out in your profession?
Be patient and kind to yourself and others; knowledge will come with exposure and experience.
What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop?
I always seek to complete further training when the opportunity presents; I have a mentor to help me explore and contribute further to my discipline and a financial planner to help me manifest my five year plan that includes further training and development.
Your lifestyle
How do you start and end your day?
First thing in the morning I usually check my emails to make sure nothing has arisen over night that requires my urgent attention and to help me prioritise my day; time permitting I go to the gym.
Last thing at night, I check my calendar to mentally prepare for the next day; then either scant over social media (light laughter).
What's the most exciting thing you have done over the past year?
I became a director of a law firm.
What’s left on your bucket list that you are dying to do?
Invent a much needed product and create a desired service.
